Information on the Medication Lexapro
- Lexapro is the brand name of escitalopram oxalate. Lexapro is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) available through prescription only.
- Lexapro is FDA approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Doctors may also prescribe Lexapro for off-label uses.
- Common side effects of Lexapro include nausea, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, fatigue, drowsiness, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, flu-like symptoms and increased sweating.
- Talk to your doctor before taking Lexapro if you have taken an MAOI, are taking Celexa (citalopram), taking the antipsychotic Orap (pimozide) or are allergic to Lexapro.
- Antidepressants have a black box warning about suicidal ideation and behavior in children, adolescents and young adults. Talk to your doctor about the warning and keep your child under close observation while he is taking the drug.
