Is Chiropractic Safe?
Chiropractic is widely recognized as the largest drug-free healthcare profession in the world.
Chiropractic is used to treat a variety of conditions including headaches, neck pain, back pain, numbness or pain in the arms or legs just to name a few.
Because chiropractors are well educated in the musculo-skeletal system of the body and nervous system, they are well suited for the management of these disorders.
Chiropractic is very safe and natural.
Many patients feel immediate relief following their first chiropractic adjustment.
Some people may experience some soreness or aching after the initial adjustment.
This is often the case when the muscles are tight around the area being adjusted or if the patient tenses up.
It is similar to the soreness you might experience after you exercise.
Research shows that this soreness usually goes away within 24 hours.
In addition to being safe, chiropractic is extremely effective in treating several musculo-skeletal conditions.
For example, research has shown that chiropractic is very effective in helping with back pain.
A study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics demonstrated that chiropractic is more effective than medical care in treating chronic low back pain in patients who were experiencing the symptoms for one year or less.
Chiropractors also effectively help many with neck pain.
Misaligned bones in the neck or cervical spine are often the cause of this.
When these bones become misaligned, the joints can become stuck and irritate the nerves in the neck.
This irritation of the nerves can also cause muscle spasm and further fixation of the joint resulting in a vicious cycle.
Chiropractors perform specific adjustments in the neck to correct the misaligned bones and restore proper motion to the joints.
This also helps to relieve the muscle spasms.
They do this with specific hands on adjustments or the use of instruments.
Neck adjustments are an effective and safe procedure.
However there are some reports that associate neck adjustments with stroke, or vertebral artery dissection.
The association of this is rare however.
Research shows that it is - 1 in 5.
85 million manipulations 1- based on the research that is current.
That is a very rare occurrence.
You have a better chance of getting hit by lightning than to have a serious reaction to a chiropractic adjustment.
The risks associated with some of the most common methods of treatment for neck and back pain today are at much higher risk than chiropractic manipulation.
For example, prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDS) carry a much greater risk with severe side effects.
This may include hospitalizations and death due to gastrointestinal bleeding.
Surgery may also be considered for treatment of back or neck pain which carries extremely high risks.
