How to Become an Artist Model

    • 1). Contact the art department of your local community college or university. Inform the department of your interest in becoming an artist model and ask what steps are required. You may also contact independent artist studios in your city to learn about open artist model positions. Ask whether work as a model would require nudity; many figure drawing classes focus upon a nude model.

    • 2). Complete an artist model application with the hiring institution or studio. The application normally consists of your contact information, driver's license (as you must be 18 years or older) and your availability schedule. Submit the application with the school or organization and wait for a response. Due to the high demand in art colleges for artist's models you can expect to have a response quickly.

    • 3). Research figure drawing poses by going to the library and viewing art books. Artist models are required to achieve different poses throughout a drawing session, so you must be well-versed in standard poses. Practice posing in front of a mirror to create visually interesting lines with your body that you believe an artist would enjoy drawing or painting. Take note that as an artist model you must hold a pose for an extended period of time.

    • 4). Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the session. Take several minutes to review the space and practice several poses before artists begin to arrive. If you will be modeling in the nude bring a robe to relax in before and after the session as well as during breaks. Never look an artist in the eye unless you are given directions to do so as this can be distracting.
