The following poem was written in response to a newspaper article in which a third grade student wrote a letter to a soldier on the battlefield in a foreign country.
The little girl wanted to know what it was like being at the front and also to try and understand why the soldiers were there.
The poem is written from the point of view of an American soldier, describing his thoughts and feelings about the US military being sent to engage a foreign foe and his desire to defend the freedom of all Americans and the American way of life.
Although freedom may be the right of an individual.
Freedom is not free and requires sacrifice.
