How to Remove Burns on a Carpet
- 1). Rub a piece of light-grade sandpaper or steel wool over the fibers of the carpet that have been damaged by the burn. Sand the carpeting until the melted fibers have been removed.
- 2). Brush or vacuum the burned area of the carpet to rid it of any ashes or burned fibers that still remain. Check the results. A light burn can be removed using just this process.
- 3). Cut away the damaged area of the carpet using a carpet knife or a utility blade. Make sure that you cut at least 2 inches beyond the perimeter of the burned area. Also, make sure that you are only cutting the carpet itself and not damaging the floor beneath.
- 4). Lay the cut-out piece of carpet onto a piece of paper. Trace the outline of the carpet piece with a pencil and then cut out the pattern you have made.
- 5). Place the tracing over a spare piece of carpet remnant. Use a piece of carpet that is not visible if you don't have any spare remnants. Look inside closets or beneath furniture you don't plan on using. Cut the replacement carpet patch to match the paper template.
- 6). Cover the back side of the replacement carpeting with glue. Make sure to go around the rim of the spare piece in order to reduce the chance of it being dislodged during normal wear and tear. Place the remnant into the area of the carpeting that you cut out.
- 7). Blend the seams by using a carpet tractor for best results. This tool is used by rolling it back and forth over the carpeting. This process will also help in sealing the new piece to the floor and the surrounding border pieces. If you don't have a tractor tool, run a book back and forth over the remnant. Allow the glue to dry completely before you allow foot traffic over it.
