Exploring Hong Kong"s Outlying Islands

The outlying islands in Hong Kong are sparsely inhabited and largely rural and are not regular tourist destinations; however some of these islands pack quite a punch and can be interesting places to visit.
The official definition for the term outlying islands is groups of islands surrounding the mainland territories of New Territory, Hong Kong Island and Kowloon; therefore there are about 230 outlying islands.
These islands though many do not have human settlements and those that do only have minor populations have been continuously inhabited for the last thousand years, archaeological points to human habitation as far back as 6000 years ago.
By tradition and because economic development seldom came their way, many of these people are farmers and fisherman mostly using largely unchanged techniques in their professions.
The Hoklo, Hakka and Tanka tribes have maintained their traditional agrarian lifestyle, though many youngsters from other tribes have sought the economic progress and the urban lifestyle of the mainland areas.
Among the outlying islands Lantau Island has a large array of tourist attractions.
Though it is twice the size of Hong Kong Island, its population is a paltry 25,000.
The Big Buddha an the Po Lin monastery that was built in the 1920's is one of Hong Kong's most imposing attractions.
This bronze statue measures up to 26 meters and weighs a staggering 202 tons.
Other Lantau attraction include H Tai O- the village of stilt houses, Cheung Sha - HK's most pristine beach and Mui Wo- Lantau main hub and the site of its shipping pier.
Other outlying islands may offer exciting experiences for tourists such as the mountainous and rugged island of Lamma which is also referred to as the Stone Age Isle due to its association with archaeology and long history of habitation.
Cheung Chau is an island frozen in time; it is reminiscent of "Old China" complete with Chinese Junks, Sampans and the traditional temple of Jade.
Hong Kong offers many delightful experiences for tourists and for travelers looking for that perfect place to stay.
