Reckless and Aggressive Drivers
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Authority (NHTSA), one-third of all vehicle accidents occur because of reckless driving, making reckless driving a big traffic problem in the United States.
It is important to not only be able to recognize reckless drivers, but also understand how to safely react, and be sure that you do not become a reckless driver yourself.
Indicators of a Reckless Driver You may be able to recognize a reckless driver when he or she performs the following negligent actions:
- Failure to stop at red lights or stop signs
- Failure to yield or allow right-of-way to other vehicles
- Failure to use turn signals
- Frequent lane switches with no warning to other drivers
- Weaving through traffic
- Tailgating other vehicles
- Speeding
Road rage is even more serious than reckless driving because a driver with road rage deliberately attempts to intimidate other drivers on the road and makes an effort to compromise their safety.
Indicators of road rage include:
- Excessive honking
- Flashing lights
- Yelling
- Vulgar gestures
- Chasing another vehicle
- Refusing to let another vehicle pass
- Cutting close to the front of another vehicle and hitting the brakes
- Attempting to push the other driver off the road
- Obscene gestures
If you encounter a reckless or aggressive driver,
- Do not retaliate with aggression or recklessness on your own part.
Continue to drive safely. - Attempt to increase the distance between your vehicle and that of the reckless driver by safely slowing down or moving to the shoulder so that the other driver can pass.
- Report reckless and aggressive drivers to the local authorities, including any information on the license plate, the car description, and the location of the event.
Whether the driver is under the influence of alcohol, inexperienced, or simply having a bad day, it is important to take steps to reduce the danger of car accidents posed by the negligent driver.
