The Skeletal System of the Foot

    Identification

    • The foot is a complex mechanical structure made up of 26 bones and 33 joints. The human foot has various tendons and ligaments that are responsible for keeping its many muscles and bones connected.

    Features

    • Approximately 25 percent of the bones in your body are in your feet. The human foot can withstand tremendous pressure. According to the Podiatry Channel's website, an average one-mile jog produces several tons of weight on the runner's feet--yet the feet remain flexible and resilient.

    Considerations

    • Three of four Americans suffer foot problems at some point in their life; women are four times as likely as men to experience such problems. Wearing high-heeled shoes is largely to blame for this statistic. According to the Foot Health Network, many foot problems are the result of wearing the wrong size shoes, being overweight and general neglect of proper foot care.
