The recent surge in the popularity of the air guns can be attributed to the increasing interest in paintball. There are a variety of guns that are available in the market, but the gun you purchase should fit your requirements and activities you would use it for.

The technology behind the working of air guns involves compressed air or other type of gas to propel pellets, bb's, and similar kinds of ammunition. Most guns are low-powered for safety reasons. However, there are more high-powered air guns also that have been used for military
and hunting events. High-powered air guns are extremely accurate and are used in the Olympic sharp shooting events. Nevertheless, these high-powered guns are not usually the best type for normal air gun activities.

Multi-stroke, often call pump-up, are the most common. These air guns need several "pumps" to get the needed internal pressure to propel the pellet from the barrel of the gun. Pump-up are compact and don't have a great deal of recoil. They are also light-weight and have moderate power. The downside of pump-up is that they may take too much time and effort to get a shot off in time to hit your quarry. The accuracy of pump-up is also somewhat limited. So if you're looking for an air gun with high accuracy, a multi-stroke may not be the best one for you.

On the other hand, single-stroke deliver a high degree of accuracy. They only need a single pump to get the proper amount of air. These are also more consistent than the pump-up variety. Plus, there is no problem of recoil with single-stroke. But, single-stroke don't provide a lot of power. That is why the hunters don't prefer to use them. On the other hand, there are many people who feel the high accuracy of single-stroke makes up for the lack of power.
Another alternative are pre-charged. These guns seem to offer the best of both worlds with high accuracy and high power. Pre-charged require little effort to get the necessary air because it comes from a Scuba tank. The compressed air is siphoned from scuba tanks into the air guns by using a special hose that has a pressure gauge. Some pre-charged deliver multiple shots, which make them good for hunting purposes. There's also little recoil associated with these air guns. So all in all, pre-charged are a good choice for a variety of activities.
