Artists and carpenters can do their work much more efficiently and inexpensively with a woodworking shop in their own home. A professional woodworking shop requires a variety of tools and must have room for moving pieces of wood and safely working on projects from all angles. The layout of the shop will vary depending on the types of woodworking tools you are using and the size of the room being converted. - A large work table should be at the center of every woodworking shop, as this will be the central location where most projects will be built. This central table will also become a place where you can lay down your tools and find them later. These tables need to be sturdy and level so that they can be efficiently worked on and support hundreds if not thousands of pounds. This means they should be built out of heavy-duty planks of wood. If you don't want to spend the money on a new work table or build one yourself, look for used butcher's blocks or counters from restaurants or kitchens which can be installed in the middle of the woodworking shop.
The table should also be accessible from all or at least most sides so that you can have full access to a wooden piece you are whittling or sanding down. Install vices on the woodworking table itself on as many corners as possible. Heavy duty tools like table saws or extension routers can be attached to one side of the work table as well, as those tools often need the most room around them to allow you to do your work. - Wall space in a woodworking shop should be used to hang tools that are displayed for easy access, rather then stored inside drawers where they are easily forgotten and lost. Particle board should be hung along the walls so that hooks can be inserted at different places and easily adjusted for different sized tools. This gives the woodworker some flexibility when new tools are purchased or discarded over time. Making a variety of tools easily visible can also give professional wood workers ideas while they are working on different projects.
- Wood which will be cut and shaped into furniture or other woodworking projects should be kept against the wall or in one corner of the woodworking shop. The wood should be easily accessible by those working within the shop itself. Metal baskets or bars can be installed against the wall where pieces of wood of varying length can be kept and easily pulled when needed. This wood that is going to be used for woodworking projects should be kept off the floor, so that there is little chance of it getting wet, warping or rotting.
