Articles (US$0.99) is a sleek and stylish way to get Wikipedia content right on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. It is a great reference app to have on hand for regular Wikipedia users.
One-stop shop for Wikipedia content
There are a variety of Wikipedia apps available for the iPhone, including the official Wikipedia Mobile app (Free).
What I love about Articles, however, is how simple and streamlined it is while still being stylish. Simplicity is a huge plus when searching through millions of articles on Wikipedia. The app’s homepage has a simple search screen, so you can start typing and the autofill feature will bring up likely search terms.
Each article is beautifully formatted, and most have a thumbnail photo for illustration. The content is sprinkled with links to other Wikipedia articles. Using the Articles app, you can also bookmark or email individual articles. The search bar remains at the top of each article, so you don’t have to go far to search for a new article. I find the articles very readable, but the font size can be customized for those who find the small text hard to read.
Articles also has some neat features that make the huge Wikipedia library more accessible. You can search for nearby articles, which may help you discover interesting local attractions or read up on some history for your current location.
The bookmarks folder can also be organized with subfolders for easy access later. This is particularly helpful if you are using the Articles app for research.
The Bottom Line
Overall, I can’t find any downsides to downloading the Articles iPhone app. The free Wikipedia Mobile app is a good alternative if you don’t want to spend any money, but Articles has it beat when it comes to style and interface. I can totally see why it was chosen as an iTunes App of the Week. Overall rating: 5 stars out of 5.
What You’ll Need
The Articles Wikipedia app is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It requires iPhone OS 4.0 or later. A separate optimized version is available for the iPad (US$4.99).
