People work hard to buy homes and possessions.
Thus it is important to keep homes and properties safe and secure.
The most basic piece of equipment that is used to do this is the lock.
However there are so many types that it can be a dilemma when it comes to determining the lock type to use.
Locksmiths can help determine the best one to use in one's home or property.
Here are some types of locks and their uses: Padlocks - Padlocks are not attached to any structure or device.
It can be moved from one item to another and can be used anywhere that needs to be secured.
They come in different sizes and are of two kinds.
One uses a key to open the lock while the other uses a dial that needs a combination of numbers to open it.
Knob Locks -These are the most frequently used types of locks on doors.
However, it is not advisable to use these on outside doors as the only protection as the knob is easily destroyed because of its structure.
They provide some form of security.
The door has to have an opening for the lock to be installed into.
Dead Bolts - These are often placed on external doors as they provide the best security.
The first kind that is most commonly used in homes is the single deadbolt.
Its weakness lies in the fact that when a would-be burglar is able to break through a window near the lock, they would be able to open the lock from the inside using what is known as the thumbturn.
A double deadbolt on the other hand needs to be opened from either on the outside and the inside.
The disadvantage is that a key needs to be used to open it when one is inside.
The third type is the lockable thumbturn which is a combination of the first two kinds.
Keys have to be used to open the lock.
On the inside, a key is needed to open the thumbturn.
Jimmy Proof Deadbolts - are used in apartments to provide better security.
The parts of the lock sit on the door and the door jamb and it is screwed onto the surface.
There is no need to drill holes into the door as a consequence.
Other types of locks include the lever handle locks, cam locks, rim locks and many others.
The lever handle lock is often used in "inside doors" while the cam lock is often used to lock filing cabinets, mailboxes and similar equipment.
Some locks are more complex than others.
