How to Test Your Mattress for Wear
- 1). Judge how you feel when you wake up every morning. If you only get three hours of sleep, you're probably going to feel pretty groggy. But if you sleep eight hours and wake up with a sore back and stiff joints, your mattress might be worn down and ready to be replaced.
- 2). Look for a visible tear on the mattress. Sometimes the mattress is covered up with sheets so often that you can miss even the most obvious damage.
- 3). Check around the edges of the mattress. This is the one part of the mattress that is supposed to remain fairly hard and stable, so if the edges are beginning to droop, that is a sign that your mattress is nearing its end.
- 4). Look for a basin forming permanently in an area where you or someone else sleeps every night. This means that the mattress is no longer stabilizing your back like it should.
- 5). Listen for noises each time you sit or lay down on the mattress. Too many creaking noises can indicate that the springs in the mattress are no longer functioning like they should.
- 6). Note if you feel a spring poking into your back while you sleep. This is an obvious sign that it is time for your mattress to go.
