How to Recycle Transformer Oil
- 1). Contact a state environmental agency where you live (see Resources). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers the service of recycling used transformer oil, according to its official website, free of charge. The EPA recycles transformer oil with any PCB level.
- 2). Remove the old oil from your transformer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 3). Contact a used oil transporter---a person who transports used oil over public highways---or store the used oil in a container made specifically for fuel transport. Label the storage container as "Used Oil."
- 4). Drop off your transformer oil at an on-site recycling location in your state. Indicate the volume of the oil you are dropping off. Oil recycling is a free service, so drop-off fees are not required.
