Check out the Silverado 1500"s tweaks for 2015
In terms of sales and hot new products, trucks dominated 2014. There are many factors to thank for the over 2.32 million transactions that brought new pickups to homes and businesses throughout the US, including cheaper gas prices and rebounding markets for contractors, but the introduction of the seriously redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra can’t be underestimated. Weight savings, extra strength, greater creature comforts, better driveability and fuel economy improvements all came at once to GM’s light-duty fullsized competitors, and you can check out the details of how it was accomplished here.
Sales incentives also played a part as Ram and GM moved in on Ford while the company was transitioning to making the dramatic new 2015 F-150. In a classic ending to another episode of the Hatfields and the McCoys, GM and Ford won. Sales of the new Silverado jumped 10.3 percent and the Sierra saw a 14.9 percent increase, according to research at goodcarbadcar.net, while Ford’s F-150 remains the best-selling vehicle in America and on planet Earth for its 34th year…outselling both nameplates anyway. Competing nameplates that deserve a serious look like the Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra also had an excellent sales year (Ram’s excellent 1500 saw a 23.6 percent sales increase), and the outgoing Nissan Titan should be checked out if you’re looking for a good bargain.
What’s New
For 2015 the Silverado’s most powerful engine, the 6.2-liter V8, gets an eight-speed transmission that promises greater fuel savings and more efficiency for towing. The eight-speed transmission replaces last year’s six-speed version.

Bodystyles
Three different cabs are available for the 2015 Silverado: Regular (3-passenger), Extended (6-passenger) and Crew (extra roomy 6-passenger). Regular cab-equipped Silverados can be combined with either a 6.5- or an 8-foot bed. Extended cabs come only with a 6.5-foot bed. Crew cab models can be paired with either the 5.75- or the 6.5-foot beds.
Engines and Powertrains
Chevy’s fullsize begins life with a 4.3-liter V6 that comes standard on all trims up to the LTZ level, churning out 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque.
Two wheel-drive models equipped with the V6 see 20 mpg combined fuel economy, an average of 18 mpg on city streets and 24 mpg on the highway. In four wheel-drive versions those numbers slip to 19 mpg combined, returning 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on highway stretches.
The LTZ trim swaps the V6 out for the 5.3-liter V8 engine, upping the oomph to 355hp and 383 lb.-ft of torque. Combined with rear-wheel drive, the 5.3-liter returns 19 mpg combined (16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway). When pushing all four wheels the engine sees the same city fuel economy but drops to 22 mpg on the highway (18 mpg combined).
Both the 4.3-liter V6 and 5.3-liter V8 come mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
At the top of the powertrain heap sits the 6.2-liter V8 that dishes out 420 hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. The Silverado 1500’s largest engine, now paired with an eight-speed automatic, is only available as an option for the LTZ and High Country trims. Fuel economy remains the same as last year for two-wheel drive models, 15 mpg in city driving and 21 mpg on the highway (17 mpg combined), but improves in four-wheel drive versions.
Four wheel-drive Silverados with the 6.2-liter V8 see exactly the same fuel economy as two-wheel drive versions. Properly equipped, a Silverado 1500 with the 6.2-liter V8 can tow up to 12,000 pounds.
Trim Levels
For 2015 Chevrolet’s Silverado 1500 is available in seven flavors. If you’re looking for a regular cab, you’ll need to outfit your truck in the more straight-to-business Work Truck, LS or LT trims. If an extended or crew cab is more of what you’re looking for, you’ll need to opt for the more luxurious LT, LTZ, High Country or Z71 trims.
The Work Truck (WT) trim begins with basics like power windows and door locks, air conditioning, cruise control, a vinyl 40/20/40-split bench seat, a rubber-covered floor, 17-inch steel wheels and a four-speaker AM/FM sound system with USB and auxiliary inputs.
A step up to the LS version (formerly 2WT) adds a touch of functionality and flash with tinted glass, chrome bumpers and grille, stainless-steel finish wheels, power/heated mirrors, keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity for calls and music, OnStar and a 4-inch color display that handles Pandora radio, satellite radio, HD radio, the CD player and voice control functions for the MyLink audio system.
LT models swap out the floor’s rubber for carpeting, upgrades the vinyl seating surfaces to cloth upholstery and adds an "E-Z" lift/lower tailgate, a six-speaker audio system, alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls and a chrome grille insert.
Nearing the Silverado 1500’s top-of-the line is the LTZ trim. LTZ models add luxury touches to the LT’s features like an 8-inch touchscreen display for the MyLink system, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated eight-way power driver passenger front seats, 18-inch alloy wheels and chrome trim, along with convenience upgrades like remote starting, a power sliding rear window with defroster, power folding mirrors, a rearview camera, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a 110-volt power outlet.
A step up from the LTZ trim can go in one of two directions. Those looking for better off-road capability go in the direction of the Z71—actually an add-on for either the LT or LTZ trims. Z71 models bring beefier shock absorbers, a heavy-duty air cleaner, hill descent control, underbody shields, recovery hooks and special badging. Those who want a little more coddling can opt for the High Country trim--Chevrolet’s entry into the lucrative luxury truck market. As such, the High Country serves up 10-way power-adjustable ventilated front seats, a premium Bose audio system, front and rear parking sensors, cargo box tie-downs, a power sliding rear window and 20-inch wheels, along with a unique grille and badging.
Safety
Every 2015 Silverado 1500 comes with antilock disc brakes, traction control, stability control, front and rear-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and the OnStar system.
Safety features like a rearview camera (standard on LTZ and up) and front and rear park assist (standard on High Country) are available as options for all trims, along with more advanced systems like forward collision alert and lane departure warning.
The NHTSA gave the 2015 Silverado 1500 5 out of 5 stars in its crash safety tests--earning a 5-star rating for overall side-impact protection and 5 stars for frontal protection.
