    Creating a System Recovery Disc

    • Before you can begin to create a system recovery disc, you will need to boot your computer and insert a blank CD or DVD into the CD/DVD ROM Drive. Often, several CDs or DVDs will be required to make a complete set of recovery discs. When you have inserted the first disc, search through the programs installed on your computer for one called something like "Recovery Manager" or "System Disk Creator." A good place to look is the "All Programs" menu that you can access through the "Start" button, usually located in the lower left corner of a Vista desktop.

When you have located the appropriate program, start it by double-clicking its name. If you are presented with multiple recovery options, choose the one called "Recovery Disc Creation" or something similar. Follow the instructions that are displayed as the program guides you through the process of creating your system recovery discs. When you begin the disc creation process, you will be asked to ensure that a blank disc is inserted in your CD/DVD Drive. Check that there is and begin the process. Your computer will gather and coordinate the files required for your system recovery disc set, then burn your first disc when it is ready. These processes may take several minutes to an hour depending on the speed of your computer and its burner. You do not have to sit and watch the entire time; your computer will pause and wait for you when it is ready for the next disc.

When the program asks for it, insert the next disc into your computer and let it burn. Repeat as many times as necessary. When your computer has burned all of the necessary system recovery files onto your discs, the process is complete. You will be informed that you have successfully created your system recovery discs. Keep them in CD cases, in a CD wallet, or some other safe place. If your operating system becomes badly corrupted, you will need those discs to restore functionality and you do not want them to be damaged.
