Motown Party Ideas
- Many of Motown's greatest hits are familiar classics of rock-'n'-roll music. Songs like the Temptations' "My Girl" and Marvin Gaye's "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" are etched upon American culture as strongly as the national anthem. However, these artists have some lesser-known --- but still remarkable --- songs. Share your love of these buried tracks by holding a listening party. At a listening party, people usually sit and listen to an album straight through, perhaps while discussing the music and sharing some snacks. One party can last three or four albums long, so ask some guests to bring over their favorite lost Motown classic. This can be an entertaining way for a small group of music lovers to spend an evening.
- For hosts with either a karaoke machine or access to a live band, have your guests prepare to perform a Motown classic of their choice. If your friends are musically inclined, they may prefer to perform on their instrument rather than sing. For some extra enjoyment, invite the guests to dress up as their favorite Motown artists.
- Motown's success reaches from the novice music appreciator all the way to the most skilled professionals. The record label's story is one that can be appreciated by musicians and music lovers of all levels. Luckily, a number of classic documentaries and movies have been made, telling different aspects of this story. The 2006 musical, "Dreamgirls," starring Beyoncé Knowles, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson is an award-winning story based loosely on the history of Diana Ross and the Supremes. Similarly, "Standing in the Shadow of Motown," is a dynamic documentary focusing on the Funk Brothers, the band behind most of Motown's classic hits. A viewing of either of these films can be a delightful way to spend an evening.
- The songs from Motown are made for dancing. From Martha and the Vandellas' 1964 hit "Dancing in the Streets" to the Jackson Five's 1970 chart-topper "ABC," Motown music has brought feet to the dance floor. To get your guests to participate, fill a computer's playlist with classic Motown songs and allow your guests to pick the order. Or, let guests vote for requests.
