Honda Generator Troubleshooting
- If the engine on your Honda generator will not start a number of different things could be to blame. First check the position of the engine switch. If the engine switch is not set to the "on" position the generator will not start. If the switch is set to "on" then check the fuel level. Also make sure that nothing is connected to the outputs of the generator, since the safety mechanisms of the generator could prevent the unit from starting if equipment is connected.
- If the engine will not start, or if the generator is running poorly, check the condition of the spark plug. Simply remove the protective cover from the spark plug, pull it out and examine it. If the spark plug is dirty, simply remove any built-up dirt and debris and then replace it. If the spark plug is dirty or fouled, it is probably best to replace it. Many owners of Honda generators will keep an extra spark plug or two on hand as a form of cheap insurance.
- Many generator owners do not realize that fuel begins to degrade almost the minute it is poured into your generator. This is true of all brands of generators, including those made by Honda. If your generator is starting hard or running poorly the quality of the fuel may be a factor. To determine whether fuel quality is a problem, simply drain the tank and replace the fuel. If you are expecting bad weather in your neck of the woods, it is a good idea to be proactive and purchase an extra can of fuel for your Honda generator. If the fuel in your generator turns out to be bad you will be prepared. Otherwise, you will have extra fuel to keep your generator and all your vital electrical appliances running until your electrical power has been restored.
