Types of Halloween Costumes
- One of the biggest allures of dressing up for Halloween is the ability to be someone else, and celebrities are often people we want to emulate. Movie stars are only the beginning of costume ideas. Rock stars, athletes, activists, artists and politicians can also inspire costumes. Recent figures in the news can be turned into a Halloween costumes, too.
- Fictional characters can be an easily recognizable Halloween costume. Princesses from movies, superheroes from comic books and cartoons on TV are some of the fictional characters that can inspire costumes. Mermaids, aliens, the Tooth Fairy and vampires are just a few more of these costume ideas.
- Reliving the past can inspire another type of Halloween costume. Flappers from the 1920s, hippies from the 1960s and punk rockers from the 1980s are all kinds of people from eras that can be emulated. People can go even further back in time and relive the distant past, including the Old West, Renaissance, ancient Greece and early man.
- Halloween is an opportunity to dress for our dream job. Children and adults who wanted to be a firefighter, nurse, astronaut or professional athlete can pretend they're one for the day. Police officers, soldiers and teachers are a few other occupations that be made into Halloween costumes.
- Creatures can make creative Halloween costumes when people dress up like animals. Domestic animals such as cats, dogs, rabbits, mice and parakeets are some types of costumes. Exotic and wild creatures can be re-created, too, including giraffes, toucans, sharks, lions, bears and snakes.
- People don't have to be other people when dressing up for Halloween. Objects can make creative costumes, too. A mouse trap, TV set, mustard bottle and candy bar are just some of the many options. Dressing up like objects can also offer a play-on-words, such as a pregnant woman who is dressed as an oven because she's said to "have a bun in the oven."
