Paxil Warnings

Paxil (generic paroxetine) is a popular prescription drug that is an SSRI and is prescribed for anxiety and depression.  It is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).  In December 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced to consumers that Paxil could increase the risk of birth defects and other complications if taken by a pregnant patient.  Two separate studies showed that women who took Paxil during the first trimester of pregnancy were 1.5 to 2 times more likely to give birth to a baby with heart problems than a woman not taking Paxil OR women taking other anti-depressants during pregnancy.

In addition, the highly respected New England Journal of Medicine published a study that linked Paxil to Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension in Newborn (PPHN); for women who took Paxil after the 20 week mark of their pregnancy, they were six times more likely to have babies suffering from PPHN than non Paxil users.  PPHN is a very serious condition that could lead to permanent brain damage, developmental delays, or even death.  Other conditions in babies linked to Paxil include heart defects, lung issues or problems breathing, and less serious issues such as irritability or tremors.

The first successful lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline took place in 2009.  A jury trial in Pennsylvania awarded the plaintiff, a woman who blamed Paxil for her baby's heart defects, $2.5 million in damages.  As of July 2010, GSK has agreed to pay at least $1 billion in damages to settle over 800 lawsuits with similar evidence.

For anyone who believes their child has suffered due to Paxil use during pregnancy, they are encouraged to visit the following website for more information about litigation:  http://paxillawhelp.com/.  Once there, the patient should complete the information form for a free case review by a team of legal experts.  Prospective clients can live anywhere and still take part in a possible claim against GSK.  Those who have suffered due to the company's negligence are entitled to compensation for lost income, present and future medical bills, and pain and suffering.
