How to Control Bahia Grass in Flowers

    • 1). Apply a post-emergent herbicide to flower gardens before planting. Spray a product containing glyphosate to the plot three or more days in advance of planting flowers. Multiple applications are usually needed to control perennial weeds like bahia grass.

    • 2). Pull bahiagrass from smaller gardens. Work when the soil is moist because it's easier to remove the roots. If the roots break off, and some remain in the ground, the bahia grass will quickly re-sprout. Wear gloves to keep your hands clean.

    • 3). Lay down a layer of wet newspaper to suffocate and prevent bahia grass. Put down six to eight papers, around the bases of flowers. Layer up to 3 inches of organic mulch on top of the newspaper. This includes ground leaves, grass clippings, pine needles or compost.

    • 4). Spray glyphosate for spot treatments around flowers. Use it with caution because the spray mist will kill stems and foliage if it's sprayed too close to the flowers.

    • 5). Apply sethoxydim, which is an ingredient in some commercial grass killers. It can be safely applied to beds with certain plants. The label has a listing of acceptable plants.
