How to Separate a Hinge

    • 1). Hold your old chisel on the edge of a workbench with the front edge of the chisel hanging off the bench.

    • 2). Run your belt sander over the tip of the chisel as you hold down the chisel with your free hand. Run the sander forward repeatedly, and turn the chisel to either side to grind the tip into a thin, fairly sharp line.

    • 3). Open the door about halfway. Set wood shims under it to brace it in place.

    • 4). Stand on the side of the door where the hinge pins are accessible. Set the tip of your chisel against the head of the hinge pin on the bottom hinge with the chisel pointed at an upward angle underneath it. Tap the back of the chisel with your hammer, knocking the pin upward and out of its casing. Set the pin aside. Don't let the door move.

    • 5). Repeat the process on the next hinge up the door until you have removed the pins from all the hinges (generally two or three).

    • 6). Grip the door on both edges, and pull it out sideways away from the doorway, so the hinges separate cleanly.
