As of 2010, GE is concentrating on energy efficient bulbs and lighting sources that cut down on energy cost and waste. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an individual's efficient use of energy yields lower bills, improved comfort levels in the home and less negative impact on the environment. Making creative lighting choices in your house does not have to mean being wasteful: you can still use layered lighting techniques to bring illumination and character to rooms in your home.

    Energy Efficient Bulbs

    • As of 2010, GE's newest energy efficient light bulb is the "Energy Smart" bulb. As a homeowner, you can save money on energy bills and bulb replacement costs by using these bulbs. The bulbs themselves last up to 10 times longer than regular bulbs. You can place these lights in any room in your house and, if you are not wasteful, expect them to last for sometimes up to a year. The bulbs use up to 75 percent less energy, too, which will lower your billing statements. Keep in mind when placing the bulbs around your home that these energy efficient bulbs provide a light output similar to normal bulbs. The lower wattage, however, may make some rooms look a touch dimmer than with normal bulbs. The bulbs come in various colors and styles and have dimmer options, so you can experiment with your options. Creating a green-colored room with energy efficient lighting could work well for a party room, for example.

    Halogen Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb

    • In October 2010, General Electric revealed the halogen compact fluorescent light bulb. The bulb contains two bulbs in one -- the halogen light, which has a spiral shape, is encased in a traditional compact light bulb. This light bulb is an ideal lighting replacement idea for rooms currently illuminated with CFL (compact fluorescent) bulbs. Unlike compact fluorescent lights -- the kind often placed in department stores or basements -- GE's hybrid light bulbs do not take time to warm up to reach their full brightness.

    Mood Lighting

    • You can create different lighting moods with GE smart bulbs and other bulb varieties. You can make a room feel welcoming, cozy, peaceful, dramatic or intimate through light intensity and placement. To build a cozy mood, for example, highlight the room's seating area with soft, ambient light to encourage your guests to make themselves comfortable. Incorporating lamps around the room -- with energy efficient bulbs -- inspires reading and conversation. You can also illuminate photographs or other pieces of art using a ceiling spotlight. Whatever mood you want to create, layering the lights -- using various light sources simultaneously -- builds a lighting style.
