SAP Business One As Successor of Great Plains DOS or Dynamics FAQ

105 5
In introduction we would like to say that questions are typically related to data export from GPA or Dynamics. If your legacy accounting was something like Eenterprise on Microsoft SQL Server then data extraction is simple and could be done in Query Analyzer. Most of the questions we are getting are about Btrieve/Pervasive SQL 2000 and Ctree. Let's begin with excurse to the history:

Q. We are using Great Plains DOS since 1990th as far as I remember myself as IT manager. It looks like current version is 9.5. Historically our server is Novel. We would like to redeploy accounting on something like Windows 2003 or even 2008. Local consulting firm recommended migration to SAP B1 but at this time we cannot commit the budget
A. There is the way to redeploy GPA on Pervasive SQL Server 2000 and Windows server 2003 or 2008. The key restriction is 32 bit platform. If you expect to have ERP budget in the future then there is the way to upgrade to Dynamics GP 2010 and it is current version as we are writing these lines in June of 2012. If you are switching to SAP B1 then we can help you with data export and if you need we can compile CSV templates. These templates are needed for migration of legacy data to SB1 via Data Transfer Workbench

Q. We understand that there is the way to update GPA 9.2 all the way to Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010. At the same time we understand that SAP B1 is cheaper in the cost of initial investment and annual maintenance plan
A. We would recommend you to discuss your situation with consulting firm with is specializing in both products. There might be nuances such as simple discrete manufacturing or warranty contracts available in Business One out of the box. At the same time GP is probably more matured ERP in the sense of the ISV channel maturity

Q. How do we export historical sales orders from Great Plains DOS 9.5?
A. We tried MS Access with ODBC connection but better results were achieved in Pervasive SQL Control Center as we had to pick only required field in SQL Select statement. You will need DDF files (field, index and file)

Q. We have large number of Crystal Reports where connection is via DDF ODBC to Btrieve database. We would like to preserve our historical software development investments
A. We agree with you on the idea to capitalize on the past experience. However if you are moving on to SAP B1 or to GP these reports need to be redesigned
