Private Scholarships for Minorities
- The Stanley J. Tarver Memorial Scholarship was created for students to pursue a Master's or Doctorate degree in African History. Applicants must be African or African American, and have completed at least one year of graduate study at a domestic college or university. The award is a maximum of $1,000 per semester for one academic year. You can apply through your school's financial aid department or by creating a free online profile with a scholarship search engine.
- Students with a declared major in insurance/risk management, accounting or business/finance are eligible to apply for the Surety Industry Scholarship Program. The program targets minority students interested in pursuing careers in the surety industry and surety underwriting profession. Each year, The Surety Foundation, the educational arm of The Surety & Fidelity Association of America (SFAA), awards a minority student with a $2,500 scholarship. The recipient must have satisfactorily completed 30 semester hours of equivalent college work and at least 6 semester hours in his or her declared major.
- T-Mobile offers minority students the opportunity to earn a scholarship and internship simultaneously. In a partnership with the United Negro College Fund, T-Mobile provides scholarship awards of up to $4,500 to selected students and an invitation to participate in a 10-12 week internship program. Recipients only receive the full scholarship award if the internship program is completed satisfactorily. Applicants must be Business, Accounting/Finance, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Engineering, Human Resources or Management Information Systems majors in order to qualify.
- In 1999, issuing the largest single gift to any scholarship organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated $1 billion to the United Negro College Fund to administer the Gates Millenium Scholarship. The Gates Millennium Scholarship provides support to students in all areas of undergraduate study and to graduate students pursuing mathematics, science, engineering, education, or library science degrees. Applicants must have a 3.3 GPA on an unweighted 4.0 scale. Award amounts vary as the scholarship is intended to offset any unmet financial aid.
