Indoor and Outdoor Mosquito and Fly Repellent
- Flies are more bothersome than harmful, buzzing around and acting a nuisance. Some species of flies do bite, leaving behind an irritated itchy area that can be an annoyance as well as unattractive mark. Mosquitoes, on the other hand, can bite and leave the mark plus transfer bacteria and disease as it moves from one creature to the next. This makes it important to keep these insects away from your home.
- Vinegar and garlic are two elements that will repel flies and mosquitoes. To make your own repellent, combine about 1/2 cup white vinegar with 2 tsp. garlic powder and 2 cups hot water. Pour this in a spray bottle and shake; using the hot water is important as it quickly dissolves the powder. Spray this solution around the interior and exterior of the home. It can even be sprayed directly onto humans and pets. Remember to stay away from sensitive areas such as the face to prevent irritation.
For a more attractive scent, add a spoonful of peppermint oil or citrus oil to diminish the smell of the garlic and vinegar. - Citronella oil works well both indoors and out, and can even be applied to the skin. Burn citronella candles outdoors, sprinkle citronella oil around the home and dab a few drops of citronella oil over the body for a natural repellent that works both indoors and outdoors.
- Always get rid of standing areas of water where mosquitoes can harbor. This includes puddles, bird baths and other areas where water may stand for an extended period of time. Prevent flies by keeping food crumbs cleaned up. Keep fruits and vegetables covered and keep other foods sealed or in containers.
