Information on the Causes of Headaches
- The most common type of headache is a tension headache, caused by tightened muscles in your neck, shoulders, jaw and scalp. Tension headaches can result from stress, anxiety or depression.
- Migraine headaches are characterized by severe pain along with nausea and visual disturbances. Migraines can be triggered by stress, changes in sleep, head trauma, strong odors, sudden noises, anxiety or bright and flashing lights.
- Sinus headaches involve pain in the front of your head and face. Sinus headaches are caused by inflammation of the sinus passages and are often associated with seasonal allergies.
- On rare occasions, headaches may be a symptom of a serious underlying disorder. Brain tumors, strokes, concussions, meningitis and seizures can all cause headaches.
- Seek immediate medical help if you have slurred speech, confusion or memory loss, a head injury or severe and localized pain in one eye.
