How to Kill Fescue
- 1). Wear protective gear. Killing fescue requires the administration of herbicides that are hazardous for humans. Gear includes eyeglasses, a mask to protect your respiratory system, and gloves.
- 2). Poison the fescue in the fall. Spray the fescue with a glyphosate-based broad-spectrum herbicide. Examples include Monsanto's Round-Up and Westland's Resolva 24H. Spray the entire fescue plant from its top down to its roots. The herbicide will quickly kill the fescue plant. You will typically see results within 14 days.
- 3). Observe the fescue patch. Fescue seeds in the ground may germinate. Allow the fescue seedlings to grow to a height of five to seven inches before administering a second round of herbicide.
- 4). Wait for one week before planting other plants or grasses to replace the fescue. Glyphosate-based herbicides are non-residual, meaning they will not poison other plants once the effects wear off. The area is safe for replanting after seven days.
