Prostate Pain Meds

104 9

    Types

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, your doctor might recommend one or more of three types of medications to address your pain: alpha blockers, over-the-counter pain relievers, and stool softeners.

    Effects

    • Alpha blockers relax your bladder and the muscles between your prostate and bladder to minimize pain with urination. OTC pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen help relieve both prostate and back pain. Stool softeners prevent constipation and reduce rectal pain.

    Side Effects

    • Alpha blockers might lower your blood pressure or give you a headache. OTC pain relievers are safe in the short term, but they can cause abdominal pain and bleeding if taken for too long. Stool softeners sometimes cause diarrhea and cramping.

    Considerations

    • If you have fever and chills along with pain, OTC pain relievers like acetaminophen will lower your temperature and make you feel better.

    Warning

    • If you have liver disease, it's a good idea to avoid acetaminophen. Ibuprofen isn't recommended for people with ulcers or kidney disease.
