How to Make Cortisone Shots Last Longer
- 1). Monitor the injection site. The longer the injection site remains intact, the longer the effects will last. Redness or swelling can be indicative of an underlying infection caused by the injection. A reaction called "cortisone flare" has also been documented in a small percentage of patients. This condition occurs when the injected cortisone crystallizes within the injection site and is indicated by swelling and extreme pain at the site.
- 2). Exercise the injured area to increase muscle support. The cortisone shot does not heal the injury--it lowers the sensation of pain by reducing the swelling. Increased muscle support will decrease stress on the area and promote permanent healing.
- 3). Supplement your diet with grapefruit. Grapefruit has naturally occurring properties that deactivate the enzyme responsible for breaking down cortisol hormones.
- 4). Sleep at least 8 hours each night. An adequate amount of sleep will naturally increase the levels of cortisol in your body. Reduced stress will also slow the firing of the body's defensive mechanisms that cause swelling.
