How to Clean a Stainless Steel Stove Pipe
- 1). Unscrew the machine screws that connect the sections of stainless steel stove pipe with a screwdriver. Pull the sections of stove pipe apart. Take the stove pipe outside for cleaning since the chore is very dusty.
- 2). Pull the pin to remove the damper plate for cleaning. The damper will fall out of the pipe. If there is excessive soot and creosote built up in the pipe, use the stove pipe brush to push the damper plate out of the stove pipe.
- 3). Insert a stove pipe brush into the stove pipe and dislodge soot and creosote by moving the brush up and down while twisting. Tap the stove pipe on the ground so the remaining soot and creosote dust falls out of the stainless steel stove pipe.
- 4). Remove soot and creosote from the damper and damper pin by scraping with a wire brush. Place the damper plate back into position and push the damper pin through the damper plate.
- 5). Remove dust from cleaning by wiping the stove pipe with a damp rag. Rinse as needed.
- 6). Take the stove pipe back inside and reassemble by pushing the pipes back into position. Re-insert all screws and tighten with a screwdriver.
- 7). Press furnace cement into joints at the stove pipe connections with a small trowel. Cut the excess with a cutting motion with the side of the trowel at a 45-degree angle. Allow to cure according to manufacturer's directions. Furnace cement that dries too quickly will crack.
