Kate Tym, The Wedding Poet, Talks About Her Job.

102 6
Sometimes I think I have the nicest job in the world. I get to meet people at a really happy time in their lives, I get to talk to them about all their inner-most feelings and I get to write a lovely poem for them at the end of it.

Some people have asked me whether I have a formula for writing my wedding poems. But that would be impossible. Each bride, groom, father, mother, sister, cousin or friend that I meet and write a poem for is completely different to the last bride, groom, father, mother, sister, cousin or friend that I met. Its amazing how different peoples stories are and even if the actual meeting and falling-in love bit seems quite similar the different personalities and circumstances of the people involved make each one seem unique and special.

Some people want to read their wedding poem during the ceremony others want to have a speech in poem form to read during the reception. Some people want a funny poem, some people want a romantic poem and some people want a mixture of both. I have written wedding poems for brides, grooms, mums, dads, sisters and brothers and no two poems are ever the same.

I start by gathering information from my client finding out as much as I can about the couple concerned so that I can make their wedding poem as personal to them as it can possibly be. I have also written several christening poems and also a couple of funeral poems. It is touching to be involved at these crucial points in peoples lives I have to be a very good listener!

I have always loved reading and writing poetry and perform regularly as a performance poet reading my own stuff, so I have a great awareness of the rhythm and flow intrinsic to good poetry. I started writing bespoke wedding poetry when I tried to find a wedding poem suitable for my own wedding and failed! I realised I couldnt be the only person who wanted a really personal poem to read on my wedding day not just a generic love poem that didnt really relate to me and I was right. And now its such a thrill to think that Ive been the metaphorical icing on the top of so many wedding cakes!
