    • 1). Download .xls to text conversion software. This type of software is not very difficult to come by. It will most likely convert the information contained in the Excel file into a "CSV" filetype. "CSV" stands for "Comma-Separated Variables." In a spreadsheet, as in Excel, information is organized by rows and columns. In a CSV file, the information is presented as text, with all the information from a row presented from left to right, with the columns being represented by commas.

An .asc file is associated with ASCII text encoding and lies in the same family as a CSV file in that it is information taken from a table and turned into standard text, without the boundaries of the table. An .asc file will typically open in Windows' Notepad or imported as "text" into most word processing programs, where you can view the information.

    • 3). Convert the .xls file to a text file using your software. You can then simply rename the text file with the ".asc" file extension and you then have a .asc file that started as a .xls file type.
