How You Can Avoid Them.
Chemicals in our environment are being linked to serious health problems, developmental delays and even heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
Researchers have pointed the finger at various plastics, pesticides, even fertilizers, as they seem to have the unfortunate ability to interfere with our endocrine system, which controls hormone functioning in our bodies.
Scrub your vegetables well You need to scrub your vegetables well before using them, or buy organic produce if you can.
You should also avoid the use of insecticides in your home and garden.
This is the latest news from researchers who have carefully looked at what pesticides could be doing to your children.
We know that we have loads of chemicals in our environment today, but they are now being linked directly to serious health problems, developmental delays and even heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
And they are affecting our children's behavior.
Not just vegetables Researchers have pointed the finger at various plastics, pesticides, even fertilizers, as they seem to have the unfortunate ability to interfere with our endocrine system, which controls hormone functioning in our bodies.
ADHD (attention defect hyperactivity disorder) has now been added to the list of ailments that could be associated with pesticides, in particular organophosphates.
The researchers found that even at very low levels, this particular group of pesticides was linked to the behavioral concerns associated with ADHD.
In analyzing levels of these compounds in the urine of more than 1000 children aged between 8 and 15, they found that those with the highest levels had the highest incidence of ADHD.
Furthermore, children that had any detectable above-average levels were more than twice as likely to have symptoms of this behavioral disorder, when compared to children that had no detectable levels.
Researchers controlled other variables Although the researchers were quick to state that this is only an association and not to be construed as a causal link, they did control for many other variables, which may also play a role, such as family socio-economical status, education, and family structure.
One of the reasons they are pretty confident that there is a strong association is because organophosphates are known to cause damage to neuronal connections in the brain, which is why they are so effective at killing the pests that want to eat our produce.
In fact, animal studies produced the same effects.
So this study has confirmed the link.
They suggest avoiding insecticides in the home, purchasing organic produce if possible, or scrubbing conventional vegetables and fruit, which will reduce some of the pesticide residue.
