On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was celebrated.
It was on that day that Americans made it clear that they understood and were deeply concerned over the deterioration of our environment and the mindless dissipation of our resources.
That day left a permanent impact on the politics of America.
It forcibly thrust the issue of environmental quality and resources conservation into the political dialogue of the Nation.
That was the important objective and achievement of Earth Day.
It showed the political and opinion leadership of the country that the people cared, that they were ready for political action, that the politicians had better get ready, too.
In short, Earth Day launched the Environmental decade with a bang.
Almost 40 years later we still need your help.
Here are 5 activities to do on Earth Day, April 26th and possibly everyday to make the world a better place.
These are not only excellent activities for children but also for adults.
1.
Be carefree.
Walk or bike to school or work - not only is it good for the body, it's good for the environment too! Exercise is an excellent side benefit.
2.
Make a bird feeder or house.
This is ideal for children.
Use a milk carton or a pine cone.
You can roll the pine cone in peanut butter (creamy - we don't want any birds to choke) and then sprinkle with birdseed.
Here is another way to make a bird feeder.
You'll need an aluminum pie tin, metal coat hanger, and a loaf of bread.
I like to get my bread from the local outlet store so the price is very reasonable.
Ask a parent to bend the hanger so that you can stick it through the loaf of bread and into the pie tin.
The top of the hanger has a slight hook to hang on a nearby tree.
The bread stands straight up and the crumbs fall into the pie tin.
It's fun and easy for all ages.
3.
Create recycling bins.
Cut out pictures of plastic bottles, paper, and aluminum cans and glue them to the bins.
Practice sorting together! This makes recycling fun and easy.
We even have an organic recycle bin for our garden.
This saves on compost and is better for our garden anyway.
4.
Grow something.
Plant a seed, sprout, flower, or tree in a pot, or garden.
Planting a vegetable garden or flower bed is a wonderful activity for the environment but it is also great exercise for you.
It is also a great way to reduce stress and enjoy the beauty and fruits that you sow.
My children are so excited to see their hard work pay off when we serve the vegetables that they grew in their very own garden.
They also have a flower garden where they enjoy just taking relaxing walks through.
You should see the pride in their faces when they show off their beautiful gardens to family and friends.
5.
Use Green Cleaners.
Make a change and start using Green cleaners.
Many people are hesitant to change cleaners because they are afraid that the cleaner won't be as effective as the old cleaners or it'll cost them more money.
However, this is a myth.
By choosing the right product, you'll be surprised because this will very easily save you money in the long term, improve your health, and help our environment - All this while still being very effective.
