Class Reunion Advice & Ideas
- Try to remember that many of your classmates have moved away and gone on to lives that are far removed from the town you all grew up in. These people are often the ones who look forward to getting back home and seeing all their old friends the most. And then, it's over. One night of reminiscing and having a great time together and it's another 10 years before they see one another again. As the organizer, you should try to give everyone a little more time. Organize a welcome night gathering at a local restaurant or bar so people can have one fun night together catching up before the main event the following night. It's like a reunion before the reunion. Those who are really eager to see everyone will get two chances.
- Invest in lots of disposable cameras. Every table at the reunion should have at least one camera. Let everyone know that they can feel free to take photos of whatever and whomever they choose. Just ask them to drop the cameras in a bin at the door on their way out. You will be able to collect the cameras and process the film then put together a keepsake publication or website for everyone to enjoy later. It'll also be a good source of photos for a slideshow at the next reunion. If you choose to publish them as a keepsake, make the photo book also serve as an alumni directory with current contact information inside.
- Make use of alumni websites and social networks to find the current contact information for all the people from your graduating class. People move frequently, change last names, phone numbers and can be quite difficult to track down. If they never receive an invitation, they may not show up to the event. Using websites that link former classmates and social network connections as address-seeking resources can be invaluable in compiling a complete list of alumni to invite. Start this process several months in advance. You may even want to set up a website where people can log in and leave their contact info and then link it to social network pages.
- When you mail out invitations, you are certainly going to have some old addresses. Of those old addresses, some of the people will at least have left proper forwarding information. If you write "Return Service Requested" on the envelope, you'll get the letter back with updated address information, if available. You'll be able to update your contact list and mail it out to the proper address.
