How to Disconnect a Toilet Flapper

    • 1). Shut off the water supply to the toilet. Look for the water supply hose connected to the bottom or side of the toilet tank. Follow this back to the wall where it meets the water supply valve. Rotate this to the right to cut off the water supply.

    • 2). Remove the lid of the toilet tank. Press the handle and flush the toilet. While pressing, continue to hold down on the handle, which will keep the flapper open. This will help drain any water in the tank.

    • 3). Follow the handle rod attached to the back of the handle on the inside of the toilet tank into the middle of the tank where it meets the flapper chain.

    • 4). Unhook the flapper chain from the end of the toilet flush rod. These typically clip into place on holes at the end of the flush lever. Use a pair of needlenose pliers, if needed, to help you remove the chain.

    • 5). Reach into the tank and disconnect the flapper from the overflow tube behind it. These flappers may snap into place, or you may need to pull the flapper up and off the overflow tube to pull it out of the tank.
