How to Make a Retro Hairband

    • 1). Wrap a flexible measuring tape around your forehead at a location where you are most likely to wear your headband. Hold the tape so that it’s snug enough to stay around your head but is not tight enough to feel uncomfortable. Write down the measurement you receive.

    • 2). Spread your retro-print fabric on a hard, flat work surface. Place the measuring tape in a straight line across the length of the fabric. Use a fabric marker or pencil to draw along the measuring tape, creating a straight line that is 2 inches longer than the circumference of your head.

    • 3). Place a stiff ruler perpendicular to the long line you have drawn. On each end of this line, use the ruler to draw another line that is 3 inches long. This is the width of your retro headband.

    • 4). Draw a line connecting the ends of these 3-inch lines. Use the edge of your ruler as a guide for maximum accuracy. You should now have drawn what appears to be a long rectangle on your retro fabric.

    • 5). Cut out the rectangle. Fold back half an inch of fabric on all four sides and pin in place. These are the hems that will make your finished headband look neat and prevent the ends from fraying.

    • 6). Sew the hems down using a sewing machine or a needle and thread. Snip away any loose thread and remove and store the pins.

    • 7). Sew a button onto one side of the headband, half an inch from the end of the fabric. The button should appear on the attractive side of the headband where the hems are not visible.

    • 8). Cut a slit in the other side of the headband half an inch from the end to make the buttonhole that will allow you to fasten your new retro headband around your head. The slit should be one-quarter inch smaller than the width of the button. Slip this opening over the button and enlarge it slightly if it doesn’t fit.
