• First generation: Derived from vegetable fats, starch, and sugar, examples of first generation bio fuels would be: Bio-gas, bio-diesel, and vegetable oil.

• Second generation: Mostly derived from waste biomass, second generation bio fuels are a more balanced option compared to the first generation.
  Second generation fuels are made up of various kinds of alcohols and diesel generated from wood.
  
• Third generation: Environmentally friendly, third generation bio fuels are derived from algae.
  The algae is farmed on a large scale specifically for creating these alternative fuels.
  Algae derived bio fuel can also easily decompose into the soil without harming it.
  
• Fourth generation: are derived by a method in which micro-organisms are raised to work with carbon dioxide to generate fuel.

Cons:

• The destruction of natural ecosystems - making bio fuels require acres of farming land, thus encroaching upon the natural habitat of plants and animals.
  Also, generating fuel from food crops makes crops unworthy for human consumption.
  Some people believe that food for human consumption should be of higher priority.
