    • 1). Take 15 to 50 mg of folic acid every day to help boost serotonin. Vitamin B6 (400 mcg per day) also is helpful in boosting serotonin. A recent study showed low vitamin B6 levels in depressed patients.

    • 2). Combine calcium and magnesium for maximum effectiveness, 500 mg of each twice a day. St. John's wort, an herbal supplement, has been shown to increase serotonin levels without many of the side effects of antidepressants. Try 300 mg of St. John's wort three times a day.

    • 3). Exercising 20 minutes a day also increases serotonin by releasing hormones called endorphins.
