String a Stop Bead

On a comfortable length of thread (no more than 5 feet), pick up a stop bead. To string a stop bead, pick up a bead and pass needle and thread through the bead in the same direction so that the thread wraps around the bead.

Pick Up Beads for the First Two Rows

Pick up 10 seed beads and push them down the thread to the stop bead. Pick up one seed bead; skip the last bead strung and pass through the next bead, going back towards the stop bead.

Stitch the Rest of the First Two Rows

Continue to pick up one bead, skip a bead, and pass through the next bead until you reach the end of the row. Remove the stop bead.

Make the Turn and Begin Stitching the Fourth Row

Pick up one bead; pass through the first bead that is jutting out from the previous row.

Stitch the Fourth Row

Continue to pick up beads and pass through the beads that are jutting out from the previous row. You will be filling in the gaps with beads as you stitch.

To turn at the end of each row, simply pick up a bead and pass through the bead you just stitched into place. You may have to hold on to your working thread to prevent the beads from loosening up or falling apart.

Continue to stitch until your piece of beadwork is the size you want it to be. To finish, weave the ends in, tie a small knot between threads, and add a small drop of glue, if desired. Clip the thread close to the beadwork. Alternately, instead of using glue, you can use a thread burner to fasten the end of the thread.
