    Shock

    • Red algae will form slimy layers over pool liners, lights, ladders and even in the water. Cleaning the slime away can prove difficult according to "Pool Wizard." First, shock the pool with chlorine. Brush and vacuum on a daily basis and clean your water filter.

    Control

    • Because red algae is a bacteria many commercially sold algae preventers will not destroy it. The best way to fight a red algae problem is by controlling the chlorine levels in your pool along with applying a red algae chemical treatment.

    Keep Clean

    • According to "Liner World," above or in ground pools that are close to the ocean are more at risk for developing red algae infestations. It is important to properly clean swim wear, toys and other equipment that enters the pool. Algae can be introduced from outside sources.
