Fiber cement board siding is composed of a fiberglass mesh that is encapsulated in a cement plaster. The exterior of the siding is finished in a wood grain pattern and the color is dyed into the siding. A finish coat protects the cement board from deterioration due to sun exposure, heavy rain and snow fall. Cement siding is available in many different widths, but only a few different styles.

    Lap Siding

    • Lap siding is installed horizontally across a home and will have an exposed siding face of 4 to 8 inches. You must pre-drill the cement board where you plan to install the nails or screws before hanging the siding. This is the most common style of siding in the U.S. today and is closely mirrored by other products such as vinyl and aluminum siding.

    Batt and Board

    • Cement board siding comes in 1-by-2 to 1-by-12 boards. You can install wide boards vertically and overlap with the smaller width boards to cover the seams.

    Cedar Shingles

    • Cement board siding makes a cedar shingle panel that is roughly 2 feet by 16 inches. Pre-drill these boards before hanging them, but also overlap them slightly at the top to create the look of real cedar shingles.
