Large Deck Ideas

If you have a large yard, you should consider heightening the decorative effect by building a large deck. Decks can extend outward vertically or horizontally in relation to the house and become a site for parties, barbecues or sunbathing. The larger the deck is, the more expensive. But, certain deck types and styles -- even for a large deck -- can be more affordable than others. - If your property slopes to the side of the house, consider building a deck that is situated halfway on solid ground while supported halfway on posts to provide a terrace effect that looks out over the slope. At one end position a louvered ceiling held up by two posts to provide shelter from the elements while you eat.
- A large deck area is still possible even if you have a cramped backyard. Just build upward instead of outward. A multilevel deck attached to a two-story house can provide exits onto the deck from both upstairs and downstairs. The upper deck can be the cooking area for barbecues while the lower deck can be where you eat.
- Multiple levels that are only a step or two up from each other can make an expansive deck look more aesthetically interesting than building just a long and wide single deck. Add even more style by creating curved steps that lead to the second, third and even fourth level of a large deck that covers much of the yard.
- One way to ensure you have one of the most interesting large decks in the neighborhood is to build a deck that wraps completely around the house. This type of deck is especially suited to houses with multiple exterior doors that allow you to walk onto the deck from rooms like the kitchen, master bedroom and living room.
- A large deck made of composite decking allows you to create interesting patterns that gain from the size quotient involved. Composite decking can be used to create a starburst effect, intricate geometric shapes and even serpentine patterns. Decorative composite decks are especially suitable for a two-story house so the magnitude of the designs can be appreciated.
- A long narrow deck that branches off into shorter walkways can serve as the pathway between the house and your pool, hot tub and barbecue area. If you want to get very sophisticated, you can also create pathways that lead from the pool to the hot tub and from the hot tub to the barbecue area. Zig-zagging patterns that lead to specific sites create the illusion that your deck is larger than it actually is.
