What Can I Use to Clean Mildew & Mold?

    • Almost everybody eventually has mildew trouble in the bathroom. Many people just take a Brillo pad and scrub the mold, but it always comes back. For a longer-lasting solution, get a bucket and mix 1 cup of chlorine to 1 gallon of water. Use a sponge or cloth to directly attack the mold growth before rinsing and allowing to dry. Then take a mixture of 1 cup of ammonia, 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1/4 cup of water and scrub the affected area again. Wear rubber gloves, turn on the fan and open any windows or doors to ensure proper ventilation.

    Furniture

    • Once mold gets into your mattress or upholstered furniture, it can become a demon to live with if you don't clean it. The worse you let it get, the more likely you'll just have to junk it. Before it gets to that point, start by vacuuming it thoroughly. Drag any mildewy mattress--and any furniture--out into bright sunlight for the vacuuming and then allow it to air out. Use a broom to brush away any mold and particles and make a mixture of half rubbing alcohol and half water. Clean the moldy area with a sponge dipped into the mixture and allow to dry. If you can still smell the mildew after this, try a professional fumigation.

    Books

    • When people begin to smell that familiar odor of mildew and mold, they often overlook one of the most common locations. Books and anything made of paper can quite easily become moldy. Fortunately, cleaning mold and mildew from books and papers in a filing cabinet is not difficult and can be quite effective. Begin by opening up the book or finding a spot for laying out papers so they can dry, such as outside or in a window box. Sprinkle cornstarch or talcum powder on the pages as this will help absorb moisture. Once the mold has loosened, wipe the mildewy books or papers clean with a cloth. To prevent future problems, consider storing your books in a drier spot inside the house or invest in a dehumidifier.
