    • 1). Research local salaries for the job position. Call similar companies in the area and inquire about salaries for comparable positions. Visit bls.gov (see first resource) and use the search function on the website to find information about the employment position. Alternatively, visit salary.com (see second resource) and enter the job title and your ZIP code in the "Salary Wizard" fields. Click search to receive a base salary range for the job position and your location.

    • 2). Write the majority of the cover letter. In the opening paragraph, express your interest in applying for the specific job position (name the position). In the second paragraph, give a brief description of your qualifications, skills and strengths that you think make you a candidate for the job position.

    • 3). Include your salary requirements as the second-to-last paragraph of the cover letter. State the range in a straightforward manner. For example, you might write, "My required salary would range between $35,000 and $40,000 annually. Please consider this salary range negotiable based on benefits, advancement potential and job responsibilities."

    • 4). Close the cover letter with a paragraph stating that you will be calling to follow-up on your application and that you look forward to an opportunity to discuss the position.

    • 5). Finish the cover letter with a closing, your name and an "Enclosure" notation.
