Migraine Prevention and Symptoms
- Migraine symptoms include severe headache pain, nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. The severity often leaves people bedridden for two or three days.
- Migraines do not have a specific cause, yet common "triggers" contribute to migraines. Triggers are stimuli---such as specific foods---that spark migraine headaches.
- Keep a daily journal of what you have eaten. When a migraine begins, review foods from the previous 48 hours to identify triggers and eliminate them from your diet.
- Common triggers include fluorescent lighting, tannins (found in red wines and tea) and dehydration. Drink plenty of water and assess your environment.
- Some migraines result from tension. Practice relaxation techniques---such as meditation and deep breathing---to alleviate stress and prevent tension headaches.
