When Do I Start My Vegetable & Herb Garden?
- Herbs are warm-season plants and will only grow in full sun and high temperatures. If you're planting vegetables and herbs together, plan to plant the garden in early to late spring to take advantage of the full summer season.
- Plant outdoor vegetables and herbs only after the last frost date in the region. Frost dates range from March in Southern California to as late as May in colder regions like Maine. Many gardeners choose to start their plants earlier indoors, then transplant them outside once the weather is warm enough.
- The best planting time is early morning, before the heat of midday arrives. Successful gardeners choose a cool, cloudy day for planting, to keep the new seedlings cool and moist during their planting.
