Uses

• Omeprazole is the generic name for Prilosec and Zegerid. Omeprazole works by decreasing acid production in the stomach. It is used to treat conditions such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Barrett's Esophagus and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. People with a bacterial infection may also use omeprazole alongside antibiotics in the treatment of H. pylori bacteria.
  
  

Interactions

• Omeprazole should not be taken with certain other drugs because serious side effects may occur, and the combination of drugs can increase or decrease the potency of the drugs taken. A health care professional should be consulted as to whether omeprazole should be taken with the following drugs: armodafinil, cilostazol, cranberry, digoxin, iron, gingko biloba, St. John's wort or warfarin.
  
  

Mild Side Effects

• Mild side effects of taking omeprazole include sneezing, back or leg pain and generalized pain in the body. Some side effects that might go away with treatment are abdominal or stomach pain.

• The moderate side effects of omperazole include a frequent need to urinate, difficulty urinating and painful urination. An omperazole user may get a sore throat, a change in the voice and have a general feeling of not feeling well. While taking omeprazole a person could also develop a skin rash, itching, red, irritated eyes and red, itching, peeling skin. A person can also feel very weak and experience unusual tiredness. Bleeding can occur, along with crusting sores on the lips. Blisters, chills, a fever and sores in the mouth may also be present.

• A person who has liver disease should not utilize omeprazole because the medication may build up in the body and not be excreted.
