    • If a dog has been poorly trained, he may urinate inside the house.naughty dog image by MichMac from Fotolia.com

Nothing is more irritating than a dog that continues to urinate on carpets and other items around the house. Usually dog urination onto carpet or other cloth items is due to a training issue. You can retrain by soaking up the urine, then placing the soaked paper towels where you want the dog to urinate. Dogs learn where to urinate by smell, so moving the urine to the desired urination spot teaches the dog where to urinate. It is important to remove all of the smell from the urine spot to prevent the dog from urinating there again.

    Absorption

    • Absorb as much of the spot as possible with paper towels. Press paper towels over the area until the urine spot starts to feel dry. The soaked towels can then be placed in the area where you want the dog to urinate in the future.

    Drenching

    • Blotting the spot is not enough to remove the smell. The area should also be drenched with clear water. Pour water over the area and blot the water up with an old towel or paper towels. This helps dilute the urine and remove some of the smell. Continue to pour water over the spot and blot it up until the towels no longer have a yellow tint.

    Baking Soda

    • Baking soda is a wonderful odor absorber. Place some baking soda over the spot and allow to sit for about 3 hours. After 3 hours vacuum the area thoroughly. This will remove most of the smell from the spot.

    Vinegar

    • Vinegar also works well as an odor absorber. After using baking soda, soak the area with white vinegar. Allow to sit for about 10 minutes, then vacuum the spot with a wet dry vacuum until dry.

    Borax

    • Borax can also be placed over the urination spot to kill bacteria and other materials in the urine. Only use a small amount of borax as it can be toxic to children and pets. Only use borax if your dog continues to urinate in the same spot where it should not.

    Steam Cleaners

    • Steam cleaners should not be used to remove dog urine stains. A steam cleaner will heat the urine, causing it to become absorbed by the fibers of the carpet. This causes the smell to set into the carpet, which is almost impossible to remove. The dog will continue to urinate in a spot where it can smell that it has urinated before. If you steam clean a urine spot, you are basically telling your dog it can urinate there again.
